NPP from various perspectives --Japanese marine products industry

Today I would like to talk about impact of TEPCO’s nuclear disaster.

North Ibaraki city was famous for Shirasu: the young of the sardine, or a white bait.

In a year, the port town’s fishermans landed more than 1000 tons of shirasu.

A lot of people participated in the marine products industry and fisheries.

After the great east japan earthquake and tsunami, a lot of ships and houses were damaged and TEPCO’s nuclear disaster influenced on Shirasu fishery seriously.

They quit the work as a fisherman one by one.

The most negative effects of that disaster was restriction of fishing area.

Around this sea area, off the coast of Fukushima is the greatest Shirasu fishery point. So, in the past, Fishermans in North Ibaragi worked mainly in off Iwaki.

After the TEPCO’s disaster, temporary fisheries were closed, but some kinds of fish which were confirmed as a safe :one of them is Shirasu, had been restarted as a test five years ago.

However, fishery cooperative in Fukushima told us to refrain from fishing in Iwaki off shore.

So we could not fish there.

The amount of Shirasu was dropped largely.

Then our income was decreased drastically, we have no choice to depend on the compensation from TEPCO still.

This is the news about North Ibaraki’s Shirasu fishery restarted(before Fukushima told to refrain from it)

When the disaster was happened, I was 10 years old.

My family is fisherman for generations and I want to help them.

Still we cannot see through the future, no one but us tried to start Shirasu fishery.

However, fishery co-op has recently started to test to get surf clam off shore of North Ibaraki instead of Shirasu fishery.

Just like them, in the tough situation, there are people who continue to move forward.

That is really encourage us.

I believe that we can revive our town’s prosperity as it was used to be.

18 years old boy’s challenge has begun.
