New energy⑴ Geothermal Heat
Considering this issue, we cannot avoid to talk about environmental damage and sustainable energy. According to Strategic energy plan, Japan plans to reduce its dependency on nuclear power as much as possible as it aims to expand renewable energy. As I wrote previous post, some developed countries’ trend is shifting from nuclear power plants to other earth-friendly energy resources such as solar power or windmill and so on. So, in this article I will talking about the new energy resources possible to generate and supply electricity in Japan.

Geothermal power plant
Geothermal power generation utilize the heat energy from underground magma.

The water from the sky is transformed into vapor when rain penetrate the soil and reach the layer of magma. The vapor stays 1000m~3000m underground.

It is general systems of geothermal power generation, digging that place so that this high temperature vapor release, and that turning a turbine.

According to Agency of Natural Resources and Energy, in 2017 the total amount of permitted output of geothermal power plant is about 530000kW, and this supplies 0.2% of Japan’s electricity supply.

There are several merits to use geothermal power. First is no need to emit CO2 in the process of generating electricity. Second, resource won’t exhaust because we use heat from magma. And also, the amount of electricity is stable unlike solar power which depends on the weather. Especially Japan is located in circum-Pacific volcanic zone, which means there are a lot of geothermal resources. So Japan has potential to be great geothermal country.

However, demerits exist. It requires quite a lot of costs and time that investigations and developments of volcanos or the places to built power facilities whether these are appropriate or not. And another big reasons are that the adequate places for geothermal power generation have already been used as hotspring resorts or national parks. These regions are flat and close to volcanoes.

America is the highest, then follows Philippines, and Indonesia. Indonesia government declared that ratio of renewable energy including geothermal power pull up by 23% from 5% until 2025.(Sankeibiz) America also focus on researching of geothermal technology by subsidizing.
